CapTel News from Ultratec – Summer 2007Captions Show Background Noises & Other Sounds on the LineMore than just words, CapTel conversation captions show you what sounds are on the line - everything from a dog barking in the background to the "Beep" of a recorded message. To help give you the complete experience of the call, the captioning service will indicate these sorts of sounds as they occur. As with any telephone call, the person you are speaking with will occasionally mumble or say something too quickly or too softly to be understood. In these instances, the captioning service will let you know by indicating (Speaker Unclear) or (Speaker Too Soft) in the captions. You may see similar messages indicating that the captioning service cannot understand what the caller is saying to accurately transcribe the call. Simply ask the caller to repeat themselves if, at any point, you need clarification about what they are saying. For a list of sound-on-the-line alerts used by the captioning service and their meanings, please see the guide on page 2. Guide to Sounds on the LineOccasionally you may see messages in parenthesis or brackets while you are on a call and receiving captions. The following list may help you understand what those messages mean.
Using the Signal Meter to Know When to Speak
The Signal Meter is an indicator that appears in the CapTel display screen to let you know when there is sound on the line (such as the other person speaking) even if the sound is not loud enough for you to hear. If you see that the Signal Meter has stopped flickering, it means the other person is "done" talking. Wait to begin speaking until you see that the other person is finished talking. The Signal Meter shows you when to begin speaking. Even if the other person has finished, you might still be waiting for captions. Tell the other person to "hang on a second" or say "one moment please" to give yourself a little extra time to read the captions while avoiding any awkward pauses in the conversation.
